Alone on 14th Street
On my way to meet friends downtown for drinks tonight I got off onto Martin Luther King Boulevard and turned right on 14th street. It was pitch black in Detroit, not a single light to shine itself onto the desolate, vacant streets and guide me to my destination.  The prickly sensation of neck hairs stood up at full attention as I flipped on my high beams passing empty property after empty...

Same Hill Different Day →
Paul Octavious never calls the hill from his series “Same Hill, Different Day” by name. The hill in question — in Lincoln Park in Chicago, overlooking Lake Michigan — is not very big, and didn’t occur naturally. It was born in the 1940s, when a pile of dirt was moved to make room for a tunnel.

The Transient And The Absolute
Today I turned 37. This sounds ridiculous but instead of heading straight home to celebrate with my family,  I stopped by a local restaurant for a quick dinner. Stepping out of my car I was immediately greeted by the brisk cold air of a January evening in Michigan. The shivering however was soon to dissipate as I opened up the door to the chatter of hungry patrons. Needless to say, the place was...

Imported From Where?
Our CEO grew up in Lawrence, Kansas.  Our President of the Americas grew up in Paramus, New Jersey.  Our CTO, Great Britain.  You get the picture. Take a look around and you’ll realize the views that make up the leadership that steers the success of my employer are far from myopic. Nothing exemplifies this more than what’s taking place 20 miles south of my house at the North...

From my good friends at Poke. Everyone knows the best time to get your baked goods is when they’re fresh out the oven. So we figured that this could be a killer use of Twitter. Letting followers know that fresh goodies are ready right now. But bakeries don’t want laptops or phones lying around in the kitchen. Flour, eggs and technology don’t mix so well. So we built...

Personal Observation
I think I’ve created a myriad of really interesting programs, campaigns and marketing innovations over the last few years but I don’t think I’ve done anything truly originative since 2001. Let’s change that in 2012.

The Death of Anonymous
I’m convinced the integration of Facebook comments into online mass media outlets such as Gannett will lead to some pretty nasty real world repercussions. We were conditioned with the empowerment one feels to express an opinion behind the mask of a screen name. Now with one click someone who disagrees can search based on your first/last name can most likely determine your city, your...
